What is 2NE1′s Secret to Gaining Attention Worldwide?
2NE1, who had set a “5 consecutive all-kill” record in South Korea, also enjoys enthusiastic attention on the global stage. Ever since “I’m The Best” clinched the Number 1 spot on Germany’s music website Viva, 2NE1’s latest single “Ugly” has also achieved a high ranking on the world’s largest music site, iTunes. Being a South Korean girl group, what is their secret to attracting worldwide fans every time they release a new song?
Recently, the Hallyu wave swept the world like a tsunami, and its weapon would be the social networking sites. Through Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Cacao, personal blogs and other social networking mediums, the charm of K-Pop spread rapidly to Japan and other Asian countries, even to as far as Europe. Also, the use of Youtube and iTunes by YG Entertainment from very early on has also provided amazing results. Big Bang, 2NE1, Se7en and other YG artistes already have a total of more than 1 billion views for their music videos. On 27th July, YG Entertainment revealed 2NE1’s “Ugly” MV but in a matter of 4 days, the number of views has already passed a million. This is also partly to increase the awareness of the presence of 2NE1 before they officially advance into the US market.
This time’s “Ugly” uses the traditional pop music style, and the MV expressing the hurt feelings due to a lack of beautiful appearance has become a hot topic, thereby accelerating the spread of the MV. Music industry professionals commented that the use of song lyrics to express wounded feelings, and gentle vocals matched with the melody allowed this song to be loved by people of different races and skin colours.
What is regretful is that because of language barriers, every word of the lyrics which pulls at heartstrings could not be conveyed completely to overseas fans. The lyrics of the chorus – “I think I’m ugly, and nobody wants to love me, I want to be pretty” – not only shows good taste, but also communicates and relates to fans worldwide because of the frustration of one’s own appearance.
YG Entertainment, in an effort to make up for the unfavourable disadvantage due to the language barriers, has overcome such a problem by investing huge amounts of money into the making of the MV. The average of 2 billion Korean won spent on each MV allowed 2NE1’s MVs have a larger influence on sites like Youtube, attracting the attention of K-Pop fans. Moreover, “Ugly” showed 2NE1’s style and fashion sense being expressed through a myriad of colours. Definitely a feast for the eyes – and ears – 2NE1 embarked on a new concept of having a phantom-like performance in the MV.
Because of this, worldwide fans left many good comments on the MV. An American fan wrote, “2NE1 always brings us good music, especially “Ugly”. Please have an English version!” Besides, after “Ugly”, 2NE1 will be having their first solo concert – “NOLZA” (Let’s Play) – and also moving onto their debut in Japan in September.

It was revealed that this car is worth 130,000,000 won (approximately $123,880.00 USD). Not only were netizens surprised by how a small girl could drive such a large vehicle, but they were also stunned when she took her car to an automatic car wash during the show. They gasped, “How could you take such an expensive car to an automatic car wash!”

About the new song, Hate You
The song that will be released on the 21st, Hate You, has a funny story behind it.
The truth is, this song was supposed to be apart of 2NE1's first full length album released last September. However due to an inappropriate song title and lyrics, while debating last minute over it, we decided not to include this song.
The reason is that the original title for Hate You was F*** YOU.
Due to worries over the fact that amongst 2NE1 members, Minji was still underaged and that the song may not have a good influence on young children who encounter 2NE1's music, we kept trying to change the lyrics, however at the same time, we couldn't find the right words that would be good enough for the title, and in the end, we ended up postponing the song indefinitely.
When producing music, sometimes these kinds of situations will occur. In this song's situation, since it's a song that the 2NE1 members really liked, at the constant request of 2NE1, we adjusted the problematic lyrics to "Hate You" and were able to include it in this mini album.
The music video for "Hate You" will also be under the guidance of pop artist, "Mary Kim" and was produced as an animation. The teaser video will be released on Monday the 18th at 12AM… the full music video will come out with the song on the 21st at 12AM.
About the title song Ugly
A strong guitar riff will lead the general song's atmosphere, and this song is a fast tempo song with a combination of rock & elec. The interesting lyrics describe one's own unattractive appearance in a blunt manner.
The melody of the chorus that CL sang is perfect for a hot summer, with her refreshing singing style and is very addictive. Taking into consideration the many foreign fans who are into K-POP, the chorus was sung in English.
The Ugly music video, directed by Han Samin, was the most expensive video to produce out of the videos that 2NE1 has released so far. It will be released along with the song on the 28th at 12AM.
The meeting of Pop Artist "Mary Kim" and 2NE1
With the desire to making 2NE1's jacket design very unique, we were able to meet the pop artist, "Mary Kim" who was already much liked by the nation. Through frequent meetings and exchange, she was able to design the 2NE1 album jacket of course, and additionally take part as a director for the Hate You animated music video.
Although in Korea, it is quite unpopular, it's possible to think that the greatest examples of when pop artists designed for foreigner's albums include Andrew Warhol for the Velvet Underground album, Julian Opie for Blur's 10th anniversary album. Moreover, brand-name Louis Vuitton was able to create several synergies while working in a collaboration with Murakami Takashi for Kanye West's Graduation album.
This April.. 2NE1's release of new songs for this year started with Park Bom's Don't Cry. The plans will not end with this mini album.

2NE1’s Sandara Park says the costumes for ‘I Am the Best’ are frightening -ACE .
While shooting the “I Am the Best” music video, 2NE1’s Sandara Park exclaimed that the members were very frightened of each other’s costumes.
On June 28th at 3:15PM KST, Sandara posted on her Me2day, “Music Video for “I Am the Best” is revealed! Did everyone see it?!” along with a slightly intimidating picture.
In the picture, Sandara is wearing a hat that seems to be made out of a solid material with two menacing horns. Additionally, she is threatening the fans in a cute fashion with a widely opened mouth while grasping both horns in her hands.
Sandara also posted, “The last part of the music video frightened us as well.” Then added, “Each of the members accused one another of being too scary… in actuality, all four of us were on the same level of being scary. Hehe!”
In the last part of the music video, all four members had a unique and distinguished hairstyle and make-up, giving off a very strong image, having a prominent impact on the audience.
However, netizens thought otherwise; comments included disagreement of Sandara’s comments such as, “It wasn’t scary at all, it was cute!” “You’re so pretty Dara unni!” and “Sandara Park is pretty regardless of what she wears.”

CL: “I Am The Best” is a song by Teddy-oppa, who is one of YG’s producers. It’s very different from ...our previous song, “Lonely,” in that it shows a different color of 2NE1. From the title, you can already feel that it is provocative, and the lyrics are empowering, it’s a really exciting song that is quite similar to our debut single, “Fire.”
Dara: We also have the choreography that’s called “The Best Dance” ~ We practiced really hard for the dance, so our actions would come out better? I showed a bit of how I looked like during I Am The Best practice, so it’s a lot of fun~ Please give us a lot of expectations~!
You will be coming back after a long time, what are your plans for “I Am The Best” activities?

Police Confirmation: Motorcyclist Killed from Daesung's Collision
Seoul, Youngdeungpo police have just confirmed that Daesung, of Big Bang, was responsible for the death of motorcyclist Hyun. They have announced that he will be charged, but not detained. What exactly he will be charged with though, has not been released.
The police explained that:
"There were only 132 seconds, or about two minutes in between Hyun's accident and Daesung's collision. We have been able to verify that Hyun was alive during that time. There were not many cars on the road, between his motorcycle accident and Daesung’s accident, so we have determined that Hyun did not die in that time frame. While the street's speed limit was 60 kph, we determined from the taxi's video that Daesung was speeding at 70 to 80 kph.”
The police also determined that the wounds Hyun suffered from the collision at "the forehead over the left eye socket area, usually seen in facial lacerations and other wounds, would be enough to be life threatening."
Police also explained that no other hit-and-run accident had occurred and that the motorcyclist was confirmed to be driving with a .186% alcohol level, while the legal limit in Korea is .05%.

Sandara Park shows off a dance move from “I Am The Best"
2NE1’s Sandara Park released a teaser shot of a dance move from “I Am The Best” through her me2DAY.
On June 22nd, Dara wrote, “On my way after finishing Olympic Hall performance! This is where we’ll have our first concert! It looks like we really will breathe close together? I’m so embarrassed~ It will be a very fresh concert! Look forward to it! This pose is “I Am The Best” point move! Try to dance along on Sunday.”
In the photo, Dara is seen posing somewhat dramatically for the camera. As always, she’s outfitted quite stylishly, but this time with a more edgy look – her red leather jacket, ’shattered’-print jeans, and fierce hairstyle all work to give her undeniable swag.
2NE1 is preparing to rock SBS’s “Inkigayo” with the debut performance of “I Am The Best”. YG Entertainment commented, “Usually, people want to prolong their comeback performance by a minute more. I am the best mp3 event !
The event will go on for two days, starting today, the 21st, until tomorrow, the 22nd; the event called “Find Director Park’s MP3 Player” has called on many of the fans to participate.
On her me2day, Sandara Park gave relevant hints for the event that directs to a certain place, specifically towards a local Apple Reseller Store, where 2NE1′s new song, “I Am The Best” is hidden in an iPad, and where the lucky people who found it can listen in.
Following Sandara Park’s hints to where “I Am The Best” MP3 can be found, people who find it must upload an authentication shot to me2day; after that, the applicants will be raffled, and the winner will be presented with VIP tickets to 2NE1′s first solo concert.
The event was first mentioned on the 20th, with Sandara Park’s me2day update, which said, “These days, it’s a place where the best bars are at!! UV went to Itaewon, but this is the place where the best G-Dragon and Big Star-nim went to have an affair~?!?” making this the first hint, giving a word game to those who read it.
Her agency, YG Entertainment said, “2NE1′s Honorary President for Public Relations Department, Sandara Park, for a long time, had wanted to prepare a special event before they would start their broadcasting activities, so together with some of the agency’s employees, they got together for a few days and threw ideas around together,” he continued, “Sandara Park had this event for fans to participate in, for 2NE1′s new song ‘I Am The Best,’ so please expect it,” he finished.

First of all, I would like to apologize for the delayed releases of 2NE1’s new songs due to internal problems. Following behind ‘Don’t Cry‘ and ‘Lonely‘ will be 2NE1’s newest track, ‘I’m the Best’, which is scheduled for June 24th.
The song was produced by YG’s main producer, Teddy, and is an electronic hip hop track that’s reminiscent of 2NE1’s debut song, ‘Fire‘. The style of the song will definitely be familiar to the youth who are used to clubbing culture.
Unlike the previous two songs, we do have plans of promoting this one on music programs. It will be the first time in nine months that the girls will promote actively on air after they concluded their first album promotions last year.
The music video for the song was directed by Seo Hyun Seung and will be released at 12:00 AM KST on the 24th concurrently with the digital single.
Our current date of release for 2NE1’s mini-album is July 21st. It will include the three releases, as well as two new tracks. Because it is an album that we have been working on for a long time, we have a lot of things planned. Further information will be updated at a later time.
On August 27th and 28th, 2NE1 will be holding their first solo concert at the Olympic Hall in Olympic Park. The hall can seat 4,000 people per concert. Although it isn’t a big concert compared to other YG concerts, we wanted to make sure that 2NE1 would be able to work closely with their fans since it’s their first concert.
Tickets will be available for sale on July 7th, and further information will be posted on YG and 2NE1’s homepages next week.
Regarding ‘2NE1 Season 3‘, the broadcast date has yet to be finalized. ‘YG ON AIR‘ will continue to be broadcast in a guerrilla fashion, where we film whenever we have good ideas.
2NE1 will be crossing over to Japan in September after their Korean promotions for about two months of debut and promotional activities.
